Meeting with Chicanos Unidos members
Last Sunday, I was able to join the Chicanos Unidos meeting. Chicanos Unidos (CU) is a group of Chicano activists from Orange County Califas. During the meeting, each member updated the progress of one’s tasks as member of CU and activities or projects they have organized as individual Chicano activists. Their main object (from what I found in the meeting) is to empower their Chicano community and bring justice in the community. One thing I found very interesting (maybe not so interesting ) was that CU fundraise for their own scholarship program, and a lot of the members are involved in educating youth. I think that the members would see the youth of Chicano communities as the victims of conventional system that has created oppressor and oppressed and as the trouble-solving brokers of the system. And, the way of leading the youth to take part to solve the problems is through education that can empower the youth. It was great meeting and I appreciated all the members working for humanistic development in community.
And!! There is something I want to share with you guys!!
I got a post card at the meeting and shared this with Heather, and Heather reminded me of the picture in the post card is just like the year book cover page of the Indian students! Isn't it interesting?
The progresses we have made for our oral history project are:
- Got contact information of people who we can possibly interview.
- Made the list of possible interviewees.
- Sent email to ask them their available time.

Very cool. Ambre and Aileen were there too, I know. Nice to have a small group of you beginning to work with them. The group has an education committee. The former head of that committee works in an explicitly Freire/Rogers method. Great instructive uncompromising guy.
BTW, its "Chican@s Unidos" with the "@" meant to be gender neutral... both an "o" and an "a"... both masculine and feminine case, get it?
Keep us posted.
Thank you for going, Sun! I aprreciate all that you have done already. Just from the emai responses that you forwarded me, it seems like there are quite a few who are enthusiastic and willing to participate in our project. I'm excited. :)
And yes, I noticed that about the post card right away and thought it was pretty crazy. They're so similar!
